We discover that we are not alone, that we are held, in the hour - TopicsExpress

We discover that we are not alone, that we are held, in the hour of our sharpest pain. Its primary: the revelation of light requires we first know the darkness from which it emerges. When we deeply suffer - for any cause, like the end of a love, or the death of a loved one or the scourge of a disease - we feel powerless and adrift. Emptied. Lost in loss, no roadmap home. This is a scary place and some of us will die here. But for most of us, grace finds us, or we find grace. Our souls have this unyielding talent to make pain teach us, to heighten our awareness and to lean us forward. For instance, in sickness we learn to savor good health; in mourning, we learn to cherish life. From our hard-earned consciousness, born of our own suffering, we see the fullness of lifes gifts in a new way and it is inviting. A way forward appears, our new hilltop in sight. Our spirt stirs. We rally. We want to love again, live again, be well again. But it is not that easy - our suffering has humbled us, tired us out, deflated us. Then the moment comes - we doubt that we can keep going on our own, the climb to the hilltop is to steep. Some of us will stay frozen here; some will die in this place. But those of us who stretch out our hands, in hope, in faith, and yes in love, we will suddenly, eye-poppingly, feel them clasped. Because we are not alone. And well start climbing once again.
