We do indeed have laws that call for criminal charges when assaults occur at protests but it doesnt appear to happen. My concern is that we have set precedents by not laying adequate charges at previous protests such as Oka, Caledonia, student protests etc and now at anti Israel demonstrations. A couple of people have been charged in Onts Peel protest but Im not expecting any potent punishment. If all of a sudden charges are laid against Palestinian or Hamas supporters, I expect an anti discriminatory backlash. Ignoring the laws for aboriginals & other identifiable groups & then all of a sudden applying the law against a specific group of Arab supporters will obviously spur racism responses. My expectation is that few judges would be comfortable hearing cases & doling out punishment when a clear precedent has been established. I would like to see Minister of Justice Peter MacKay establish a new potent law including mandatory minimum sentences & other restrictions on assaults at protests or rallies..We have allowed hate to run unabated at protests & the damage is done. I doubt much will come of assaults & hate at Peel & Calgary protests because the guilty have been given a free card by non action at previous protests. Human rights precedences can be a powerful defence and will be used. . Protests are a democratic right where laws must be obeyed & transgressors apprehended & charged. Time for Harper & MacKay to defend democracy & not leave it to the discretion of biased municipal leaders and their blinded police.
