We dont have a lot of super nice things. We live in an old house. We both drive older vehicles. We dont have all the latest gadgets. Every single major appliance in my home, I bought 2nd hand. Except for my refrigerator, that came with the house (which I bought 15 years ago). But I dont want for anything (outside of being debt free and about 3 inches taller). In my line of work, I have witnessed how very little some people have and how the smallest thing (a decorative bowl, a trinket box, a ceramic figurine) can make a persons eyes light up. I was at Lets Help the other day and saw how happy the household items made people. And while I have donated food and clothing to them and other agencies, I had never thought about donating household items. Things I have stored in my basement and garage, just taking up space, and which will eventually just be thrown out to the curb one day. These are things someone else might treasure. When you dont have a lot, having little things to make your home a home are a big deal. So I encourage everyone who does any clearing out before winter to donate those things to places like Lets Help and Doorstep. Things like: Sheet sets Curtains Knick knacks Wall hangings Fake plants Dishes Utensils Bakeware Pots and pans Lamps Table cloths Furniture Televisions Radios Sure those things arent necessary for survival but pleasant surroundings can help make a huge difference in a persons life. Especially if those persons rarely get out due to disability. I also encourage people to donate food, clothing (especially coats as it gets colder), shoes, money, and time if they can. Being poor doesnt necessarily mean someone isnt willing to work. You never know a persons story.
