We dont know why Jawmaine was killed, but we know why people are - TopicsExpress

We dont know why Jawmaine was killed, but we know why people are dying. (commentary) There are many who speculate that Ernest Meighan, the former Cross Country Cycling Champion may have been killed because his daughter was charged with a crime. Other speculate that it was because his siblings have had a tempered relationship with the police and criminal elements. But the most plausible guess is the one that most people have not considered. Belize City has become violent? Belize City is the hub of violence that comes out on yearly reports. There was a reduction in murder for the period of January to October when looking at 119 in 2012 to 88 in 2013. But in 2013, 31 of 59 murders that occurred in the first six months were Belize City killings. That’s more than half the national average. So could it simply be that Jawmaine was a victim of living in a crime ridden city? Could he be a victim of circumstance as many others are? Citizens prefer to believe that there has to be a motive behind killings because then they still have the illusion of safety because citizens know that they have done no wrong and hence no one would kill them. Jawmaine was a cycling hero, a legend from a previous era. The only way Belize will change is if witnesses testify and politicians are convicted of their crimes. We, the people, must start caring and stop thinking its not our problem. If we dont fix it who will?
