We express our deepest sympathies to our Sri Lankan Brethren who are being affected by the landslides. The deadly mudslide which came after heavy monsoon rains, hit the Meeriyabedda tea plantation,an area where English Tea Shop sources its organic teas, near the town of Haldummulla, about 200 km (120 miles) east of the capital Colombo, on 29th Wednesday at 07:30 local time (02:30 GMT). The mudslide has completely buried over 70 line houses of the tea sector workers and community buildings. According to the Government, nearly 50 people are feared dead. Those who survived are the school children who left the village early morning and the people who left for work before the disaster took place. By the time they returned, their homes were vanished without a trace. The number of children whose both parents have died exceed 70. Police and Army personnel and volunteers have been deployed for rescue and relief work. Rescue efforts were being hampered by persistent monsoon rains. More than 300 survivors camped overnight in the schools near the Meeriyabedda tea plantation which bore the full brunt of the mudslide. Our CEO has appointed a special team to investigate the requirements of the people who have been highly affected in order to initiate some major projects to uplift their lives.
