We got Olivias blood work back. It showed an ANC of over 2,000 and her white blood count was 2.5. But right now these are sort of artificial numbers because she only has them because of the GCSF and the white blood transfusion. The doctors want to continue to give her both every day until we see that her body is generating ANC and white blood cells on its own because if we were to stop the transfusions and GCSF now, the numbers would drop right back to zero again. We asked the doctor how we will know when her body will be generating them on its own when we keep giving her the GCSF medication and white blood cell transfusions. He explained that we will know by her other numbers. Once we start seeing the rest of her numbers (monos etc.) start climbing then we will know that her body is starting to generate the rest of them. I expressed my concern about giving her another white blood cell transfusion and how I was very scared of having another episode like we did last night. He was very honest and expressed the same concern but he said they are concerned to give the transfusion and they are concerned to not give it. He said that we have to get this infection under control and that is the top priority at the moment. The only way to do that is to continue with this plan. He said that they are hopeful of the fact that since she has white blood cells now (due to the transfusion last night) that another transfusion will be less of a shock to her system. Some of the thought is that as soon as the white blood cells got into her system they went straight to the infection and starting attacking quickly resulting in her having a high fever and high heart rate. She is just about finished with her second white blood cell transfusion and they are monitoring her very closely. In the ICU she is continuously hooked up to every machine you can think of and they are watching her numbers non stop. So any little thing will be caught and dealt with immediately. I am actually very glad we are in the ICU for this transfusion. Her reaction last night happened about an hour after the transfusion was complete. I will definitely keep you all updated with everything that is going on. At the moment she is awake and playing a game with Bret on his phone. Shes quiet but content and pain free. We are hoping for a very uneventful night with a lot of catch up sleep.
