We got the chance to go to the screening of Running Deer, on the American Indian Film Festival, in San Francisco two weeks ago. Directed by Brent Ryan Green, with Booboo Stewart, Qorianka Kilcher, Jon Proudstar, Casey Camp-Horinek and Happy Frejo among the cast. The story: A high school cross country star growing up in a Native American community faces a barrage of personal struggles the day before the most important race of his life.. Jon Proudstar, who plays Booboo’s dad in the film said when he got the script, - ‘Finally! A script that shows Native Americans in a positive light!’ And yes. Its an honest and true portrayal of modern Native Americans. Rare but hopefully not the last time such good short film/movies will be made. A lot of the movies that were shown at this years festival showed an honest and true portrayal of todays Native Americans. The fight the indigenous peoples have had with the whites Hollywood have turned into something good, and unique. And the fight should not stop either.
