We got the #necropsy results from the #BroadWingHawk in this morning. Although his swab tested negative for #WestNileVirus, he was indeed suffering from an #encephalitis. Here is the report as we received it (#hashtags added by HAWK Center): The cause of the #neurological signs is a Gram-negative bacterial encephalitis. The brain was not cultured so a specific etiologic could not be identified. PCR for West Nile virus is negative. In addition, there is a fungal #pneumonia that is forming a focal granuloma in the lungs. There is some extension into the surrounding lungs, but it is not widespread. The fungal morphology is likely consistent with an #Aspergillus spp. It is not possible to determine whether the fungal pneumonia or the bacterial encephalitis is the primary infection in this case. Either etiology could serve as a secondary infection for the other. #hawkcenter2014
