We got up and out early to get to the Iowa State Fair between rain - TopicsExpress

We got up and out early to get to the Iowa State Fair between rain storms today. On the way we passed a huge wind farm in Adair, IA. In the vast farmland here, the wind turbines look like they belong. In a sense I guess they do, a clean energy alternative for the environment, a great deal of space and an excellent investment for everyone, especially the farmers. I almost popped off Route 80 at Exit 110 to see the covered bridges of Madison county. We all know how much I love covered bridges and oh...that book!!!! Trying to beat the rain, I decided instead of stopping I would read the book again. The Iowa State Fair is incredible!!!!! The rides, games and food are overwhelming. My favorite part of the fair was the livestock. I watched a group of sheep being judged. I got to see the animals being groomed and speak to their owners. Oh, the sounds and the smells were heavenly! The animals were so very beautiful. Later I got to see the winner of the great pumpkin contest weighing in at over one thousand pounds!!!! I searched and searched for deep fried coca cola...it was a no show this year. I asked many vendors, the information booth and I walked and walked around looking and it just wasnt there. Needless to say I was disappointed. I wasnt thrilled to taste it but I was very curious about how it was made. I almost tried a deep fried Oreo, simply because I love Oreo cookies. Then I saw them swimming in oil and decided to pass. I have an adventurous palate for sure but deep fried anything is not really on my tasty list. I took a photo of deep fried Mac and cheese wondering if it comes with an aspirin. I settled on a plain old hot dog on a bun with ketchup only. The guy next to me got a pickle dawg and I thought I would be sick. Different strokes...I figured I should get something on a stick so I tried vanilla ice cream dipped in chocolate and covered in peanuts. Again, pretty boring but I have a drive ahead and couldnt bear to have an upset stomach. Maddie was not allowed in the fair. I may have stayed longer if she was allowed I but I enjoyed the time I spent there very much. She was so happy to see me return I dont think she was mad at me when she smelled that I had been patting goats! So, its back on the road heading toward Illinois.
