We had 30 starters for the winter open, a surprisingly large turnout considering there were just 12 players registered a week ago. There were 7 interstaters Gabriel Cheang who was visiting Canberra from Singapore. Interstaters were (pleasantly) surprised that Canberra was warm with Rob York commenting that it was warmer in Canberra today than it was in Melbourne yesterday. We welcomed back a number of players after long breaks with Ben Munson and Ted Schultheis competing in their first ACT tournament since2011. David Gould played for the first time since 2009 and Tony Herlt was at his first tournament since 2006. Tony had a great day out and helped himself to the high rating gain after an impressive 102 ratings point gain. A special mention to Michael Adler who recovered from a first round thrashing to win 6 games and 61 ratings points. I managed to pick up biggest ratings loss with 57 points down the drain.
