We had a cold enough winter that the ice on our pond was - TopicsExpress

We had a cold enough winter that the ice on our pond was exceptionally thick and it has persisted through the melt down of our snow cover. Northern slopes and woods-shaded areas still have significant snow depth, but all else has run downhill, since the thaw has not penetrated the ground frost. The pond has received enough melt water that it has lifted the ice about 18, and there is about ten feet of open water around the edges. This margin has been heavily populated by migrating water fowl for the past several days. Today, I noticed that a blue heron has taken up residence for the summer. The next couple days are predicted to be above 50 degrees. It may be that the pond will turn over and the winter ice will gone. It will be another irrevocable step toward mild weather and the carpet of flowers in my wood lot.
