“We had a good life in Angola, Africa, but my dad used to beat up my mom, so she took her six children and fled. She left three of us in Cape Verde with my aunt and came here with the other three. When I was 10, we finally reunited. About three years ago, I met my dad for the first time since we fled—23 years earlier. I am the only one in my family to go to college. All the other ones, because they were older, had to start working after high school to help my mom as a single mother.”
