We had a heated discussion on our page tonight regarding whether a meme (featuring Mr. T of all people) had anything to do with common core. When faced with the query of Do you know what common core is, here was the response. Does anyone have any advice to offer this mom of 3? It does have something to do with Common Core Math hence the name of this Facebook page. Yes, I do know what common core math is. It is confusing, frustrating, and meant to dumb down our children. I have three children in the public school system in Washington state. One in 9th, 6th and 2nd grades. My sixth grader represented her school in Olympia in a math competition while in the fourth grade. She was a straight A student that year and received an award from the state of Washington in math at the end of the school year. Common core math is introduced in fifth grade and I now have a child that once loved math crying every night because it makes no sense. My husband and I spend hours on the computer trying to learn common core math just to help her. Oh and add in a couple of extra difficult questions in the page of homework just to see if the kids get it. Sucks the fun right out of math for a child who thrives on completing her homework and get straight As. Oh and have fun trying to even find the common variable in word problems. You have to work the problem multiple times until you get the right answer. Now that is an encouraging way to do math. I can do it the old way I was taught to get the correct answer and then work it backwards to help my daughter, but that only confuses her and it does nothing to help her. If common core does this to my child; what does it do for the C or D student. What about the students who have parents who dont or wont take the time to help their child. See, I do know what common core math is. Do you? I also know what Singapore Math is. Do you? If not, then let me just let you know that it is the same garbage. So you tell me: what us common core math? Oh and second grade. Let us draw square after square after square to find an answer. Drawing squares should be left to art class. Yes, I am a frustrated mom of daughter who once was a starlight A student and loved math. An honest mother who cares about her childrens education. What does this do to her college entrance now? What does this common core math do that is good for anyone? You tell me.
