We had a little scare early Friday morning, but all is better now. - TopicsExpress

We had a little scare early Friday morning, but all is better now. Oscar the Kidney decided we needed some excitement, and his urine output decreased -- to the point that Marvin had fluid building up around his heart and lungs (which is never a good thing). Marvin spent all day and all night in the hospital, but hes home now and Oscars output has greatly increased. Some people think that a kidney transplant is a cure, but its not. Its only another form of treatment for those with kidney failure. Once you have this disease, youre never cured. You always have it, and you always struggle with the effects it has on your whole body. Some ESRD (End Stage Renal Disease) patients have harder struggles than others, and it seems that Marvin was destined to be one of the ones who has the tougher struggles. Not to lessen the fight that people with other diseases have, but with kidney failure, youre NEVER out of the woods, and you know that you are ALWAYS just a day or two away from dialysis (or without dialysis, death). While we saw Marvins many years of dialysis treatments as a blessing, there is nothing about dialysis thats easy. Despite the struggles that Marvin has had -- and will continue to have -- he is still a lucky, lucky man. Oscar is rebounding and has kept dialysis away for another day or two yet again. There are many we have known with ESRD who have not had the opportunity to fight for as long as Marvin has (20 years next March). There are many who have not had the luck to get a transplant (or, in Marvins case -- TWO). There are many who did not get a kidney that fights, and fights, and fights as Oscar does. Even with the struggles and the tough life we have, there are many others all around us who are not nearly as lucky.
