We had a message this week asking what we do with the maize after the maze season. We thought some of you may be interested too... We harvest the maize in the Autumn, usually mid October. The whole plant (leaves, stem and cob) is chopped up by a large machine called a forage harvester and then we store the crop in a silage clamp , by compacting it the air is removed and the fermentation process keeps the maize stable as a feed for our dairy cows over the winter months. We actually grow about 150 acres of maize on the farm - were only using about 18 for the maize maze this year!. It is similar to sweetcorn but a different variety that is designed for cattle feed. It tastes horrible to us but the cows love it.
