We had a nice day today. The Christmas thing was starting to get a little long in the tooth and cabin fever was starting to set in so....The boys and I set out with a tank full of cheap gas ($1.86 a gal at Safeway...with rewards points) and Hawk Hill as our target. Beautiful day out...the land looked refreshed and the greens were the greenest...the blues the bluest. I especially like crossing the Richmond San Rafael Bridge.....something about coming out of the shadows at the toll booth and out into the bright light and being hit in the face by the great view of both San Pablo and San Francisco Bay has always been a high point for me....probably has something to do with all the nice memories of heading to Marin with lots of friends and lovers....a beautiful spot this is. Of course I was pointing out hills and piers and the various things that Id done and buildings Id built (a lifetime ago) and places of interest like the final scene location in Dirty Harry and where the old Brickworks were (at San Quentin) Anyway we motorvated down 101 and off at Alexander and along the twisty road that clings to the coast to Hawk Hill. Id told these guys about the Peregrines and Redtails and even Eagles that gathered and coast on and tread the wind. The short hike up the hill in 50mph winds was very refreshing to say the least. Got to the top...not one bird in sight..no where no how...dang.... However, that wind cleared the sky up so nice, the Farralones were distinct as were ships on the horizon... really cool...but no birds.. No biggie I say..lets trip on over to Sausalito and check out The Bay Model....I dont think my kids have been to town since they were tykes. We went past The Trident....wanted to go in and reminiscence but I figured theyd be bored and besides I probably couldnt afford it these days.... We found the Bay Model and parked and prowled the waterfront for a bit then headed in to the Big building that houses this scientifically accurate model of the bay. It is used to simulate tides and flow, pollution patterns and all sorts of stuff that water scientitionists know about......I just like to watch this stuff and would be happy if they let me start out a model boat loaded with firecrackers from Rio Vista and see if I could time em to explode at Alcatraz but I dont think they will go for it...... note: The Trident....The birthplace of untethered hippie chick waitresses in see through gauze ........always, always loved this place......saw David Crosby and Nash in here one afternoon.... We really wanted to go in but................closed New Years eve 12-4....sheesh...0 for 2. I tried to think of something else to do and came up with The 2 A.M. club in Mill Valley...scene of many last drink of the night nights. Dang, neither of these guys can get in.........but I peeked in the door..it didnt look nearly as divey as it did way back then.....I was a little disappointed. We drove on looking for Mill Valley Records......passing SUPER DUPER Burgers on the way. We found it...they had moved..it was 7 years ago since they were Village Records....same aura though. Leafed through the mostly unorganized stacks and bought me a copy of Vince Gauraldis Black Orpheus.....my LP is beyond repair being 36 yrs old.....The kids didnt find anything they could afford...Jeff really wanted that 4 cd Velvet Underground Box Set but hes learning to budget....this is good. Well there was no avoiding SUPER DUPER BURGER! Good and Filling it was........100% grass fed, lead free, unprocessed, no pesticide, no GTMO, no filler, no pink slime, no anything else the Whole Food crowd doesnt agree with...after all, it is Mill Valley...I wouldnt expect anything less. Took the long way home across the top of the bay...the young one fell asleep in the back and I got to talk to my 17 year old about college, his friends, and other subjects that seem to be more and more off limits as he begins cherishing his privacy.....I know it will turn around at some point. Im happy he opened back up a little. A very nice day........if gas stays affordable maybe well have more of these road trips...... Happy new year folks....take some time to breathe.....chow....
