We had gone into Family Dollar looking for a clear rubber sink - TopicsExpress

We had gone into Family Dollar looking for a clear rubber sink mat, something Kathy could put on the glass countertop at the co-op. We ended up with seven or eight other items, but no mat. The line at the cashier was getting pretty long, and when they opened a second register we moved right over, behind a woman with two or three things. Her bill came to $7.68, but when she checked her money she only had seven dollars. I don’t know if she expected the cashier to let her slide for the rest, but no offer was made, and after an uncomfortable moment of staring at each other, the customer said, “Well, I’m gonna have to go out to the car to get the rest,” and walked away. “Really?” Kathy laughed. “Don’t worry,” said the clerk. “I’ll just suspend her sale ‘til she comes back in. Go ahead and put your stuff up.” We checked out without further incident, grabbed our bags and headed out the door. The woman who had been in front of us still hadn’t come back. I didn’t see her in the parking lot and turned to Kathy. “What the heck did she do – skip out and leave everything sitting there?” “No, there she is. Oh, you gotta be kidding me.” “What’s that?” I asked. “She’s sitting in that car, looking down at the middle console,” Kathy said. “But look at the car – it’s a Jaguar. She’s driving a Jag, and she has to dig for change!” It didn’t occur to me at the time, but maybe that wasn’t even her car.
