We had to sing various songs during assembly every Wednesday - TopicsExpress

We had to sing various songs during assembly every Wednesday morning at PS 219 in Brooklyn. We had to wear navy blue skirts, white blouses and either a red vest or one of those little cross ties with the white pearl snap. I didnt know that they had us dressed as little flags. I also didnt know that most of the songs we sang focused on social activism because those were the times we were living in. If I Had a Hammer, Where Have All the Flowers Gone, even a song like Born Free had us consider our world in a way that made us at least think about a better day. Even though I was totally oblivious to all the boogiemen at that age, looking back now I can see that all of the music that I listened to and sang (and even rewrote the lyrics at the ripe old age of 8 New York, New York Is a Helluva Town) had a huge influence on who I am and how I think today. Similarly, It is also quite clear that the world and the people in it, especially some younger folk, are colder and harder - almost as though theyve lost some of their humanity. Many have cried out through their music. For the most part, we didnt listen. We judged and set our sights toward killing the messenger...
