We have a few hundred new members join in the last couple of months. Welcome! I know all the information can seem overwhelming. Take your time and little by little you will get the gist. Things are moving very quickly now, as Cuomo has made it clear that his intention is to change (destroy) public education as we know it. We are all on high alert and monitoring every situation as they happen. Groups like ours as well as local unions from all over the state are working very hard together through the New York State Allies for Public Education (nysape.org) to strategize how to defeat this plan before it gains traction. One thing is clear. Opting out in massive numbers may be our only chance left. When massive amounts of money are dangled, rules change and things are approved regardless of what the people want. But we still hold the power for a check mate through refusals. We have a terminology guide on NYSAPE website as well. New members may want to go through that to learn all the acronyms such as APPR, RTI, AIS, BOR, BOE etc...there are guides, letters, and fact sheets on there as well. I also recommend attending one of the many forums we will be holding all across the island, and many across the state. Schedules will be posted soon. Bottom line is, they are trying to strip our local districts and Board of Educations of all local control. They want nothing short of State and privately owned schools across NY. We cannot allow that to happen. We stand now. We fight while there is still something left to fight for.
