Twelve teams have confirmed their entry for the badminton League, which will kick off on Oct 15 at the Sports Arena in Taman Sentosa here. Several top names – like former internationals Yap Kim Hock, Ong Ewe Hock, Chor Hooi Yee and current international Tan Boon Heong – have decided to take ownership of several participating clubs in the inaugural league. Kim Hock is the owner of Klang United BC while Ewe Hock will be in charge of Serdang BC. National doubles shuttler Boon Heong, who is currently in Incheon for the Asian Games, is the co-owner of the Kepong BC with Candy Bee. A total of 12 teams will play in a round-robin format from Oct 15-Feb 8 and all matches will be telecast live. All teams are keeping the names of their playing members under wraps but world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei has confirmed his participation with Petaling BC. The names of several top shuttlers from China, Indonesia and Denmark will be released soon. A club can register 20 players and they are only allowed to engage two players in the top 32 bracket. This is to ensure that the richer clubs do not have a monopoly of the best players. The clubs can have foreign players too – but they should not constitute more than 30% of the team members. A tie is decided over two men’s singles, two men’s doubles, one women’s singles and one mixed doubles. The team with the highest points at the end of season will walk home with RM1mil. The format of play is different – each match will be played using the best-of-11 points in three games. Jack Koh, the founder of Purple League (M) Sdn Bhd, is happy with the overwhelming response. “This league will be an ideal platform for many aspiring talents in the country to brush shoulders with the best players in the world. It will be a bridge for them to move up in their badminton career,” he said. THE TEAMS AND OWNERS 1. Ampang Jaya BC (Ho Khek Mong) 2. Puchong BC (Andy Lor and Jeremy Gan) 3.
