We have a lot’s of phone calls from people every day asking about kitchen island: styles, decorations, ideal dimensions, proportions, colors… I think you will find it helpful. Kitchen Island: Kitchen island has contributed, more than any other kitchen innovation, to create social environment in what was once primarily a work space. Islands are first and foremost practical; they offer a generous chopping, slicing, mixing surfaces and can house warming drawers, kitchen and bar sinks, wine coolers, dish washer, microwave and other beverage centers. Kitchen island is a place to gather around casually, talk with the cook, or read the paper with morning coffee. It can also act as a physical buffer in the space, diverting foot traffic away from heavy-use areas, like a sink or a stove, or blocking the clutter of the vestigial work area from view. One could say that the island – be it big, small, or peninsula – has become almost a fourth family member of the kitchen, along with the three major appliances. When designing kitchen island into your plan, think about a real island with water (in this case, floor space) on all sides. You want to have plenty of room to navigate – a 360 degree flow. The basic rule is a minimum of 36 inches of walk-by space in each direction to avoid interference with an appliance (other than the big three), cabinet or table while seated at the island. If you don’t have room for kitchen island, don’t give up on the concept altogether. Consider a peninsula, which is anchored to the flanking cabinetry so it’s open on three sides. Besides fitting your kitchen island into your drawings, an island should be comfortably sized – not oversized! If you can’t reach across the expanse to pass a plate, the island is probably too wide. Most of the islands our clients like are 48 inches in width (that includes 12 inches of the overhang) and length ranges from 5ft to 9ft. For classic, antique, country and traditional kitchens we manufacture well dressed kitchen island with corbels, moldings, posts, decorative legs, open shelves for cooking books, wine rack, different moldings, trim, decorative panels and glass framed doors… For the classic kitchen we dress island with decorative posts, moldings, decorative trim, paneling and decorative baseboards. Classic kitchens we try not to overdress with decorative elements a lot. For antique looking kitchen besides all listed above we add to the island wine rack, open shelves with decorated trim around it. Our clients really like long and short corbels as part of the decorations on the kitchen island. Traditional kitchens may have combination of the decorative elements. Besides of what has been listed above we also add decorative legs, moldings, trim, glass framed doors and of course decorative baseboard with arches. Contemporary kitchen on the other hand are completely plain decoration wise. Our clients really like high gloss finish on them. Most of the kitchen islands are painted or stained different color then the kitchen itself. Sometimes we use different wood or other materials to create this unique island that corresponds to your life style. If you like traditional kitchens here is and example of color combination that you may like. If you familiar with Benjamin Moore, color code CC40 (off white) for kitchen doors and decorative panels and real walnut wood shaded light or dark brown color. Walnut wood has beautiful heavy grain.
