We have a new celebrity in our club. Don Miyada has been quoted in a number of newspapers and his story is now everywhere on the internet. On the evening of June 19th, Don was among the 560 graduates at Newport Harbor High School, at the age of 89 he finally fulfilled his dream of attending his graduation ceremony that he missed in 1942 after being forced into a Japanese internment camp at the start of World War II. When students at Newport Harbor High School learned of Don’s story, they invited him to walk alongside them in their graduation ceremony. After singing the national anthem and saying the Pledge of Allegiance, a crowd of parents, students and school officials cheered and clapped as Don walked across the stage. He also was one of 15 individuals to be inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame. Congratulations Don. Congratulation are also due to our OCNCC Community Award recipients. This year our club had two recipients of the award, Ray Okazaki and Bobby Iwashita. Bobby received the prestigious Pioneer award for his lifelong commitment and service to the community. Dan Fukushima and Steve Okamura did a great job introducing our most deserving members at the awards dinner held on May 21st. Our high school senior recognition events were held in May, congratulation to the flowing 2014 SOC scholarship recipients: JA High School Senior Recognition Alyssa Isogawa Marc Marutani Daniel Matsunaga Devon Nishizu Narayan Okuma Stacy Suzuki Renee Yamashiro Laurel High School Senior Recognition Amber Drieslein Marcelo Perez Terresa Rios Joseph Wainanuska
