We have a stray who has been hanging around for a couple of months - TopicsExpress

We have a stray who has been hanging around for a couple of months and eating the food I put out for the ferals/fox/hedgehogs (cat food). I have been putting out extra just to make sure they all have enough. He wont come anywhere near when there are people about and lurks in the bushes opposite where I have the feral den hidden. His owner is frantic to catch him. They have set up a trap in next doors garden. Unfortunately, they keep moving it and currently it has a duvet squashed in the back. They have finally covered it over to keep off the rain. They keep putting food in the middle or at the front although I have explained why that isnt a good idea. They cant now put it at the back because the duvet takes up most of the room. Yesterday my neighbour demanded that I stop putting food out until they catch him. He seems to think if I stop feeding the cats that have been relying on me for the last 3 years Charlie (the stray they are trying to catch) will just walk into the trap and eat the food in there. I tried to explain but he stormed off and slammed his door. I rang their doorbell several times to try to tell them why it was a bad idea and what they should do -put something even more delicious than cat food - chicken/sardines/whatever - in the trap and face it towards my garden (there is no dividing fence) once Charlie has got used to it being there, but they wouldnt open their door. I wrote a note and dropped it through there door explaining that if I stopped feeding them the likelihood was that Charlie would wander off to find food elsewhere (quite apart from my poor ferals starving to death or eating the small amount of food in the trap themselves). I knocked again later with some chicken I had bought and was told I wasnt helping and had the door slammed in my face. Lovely. Later on Sylvester (one of the ferals) came to eat and went to investigate the food in the trap next door and was chased away by them banging on their window and shooing him off. Hardly any of the food I left out was eaten and I threw away almost 2 full bowls full this morning. Usually there isnt a scrap left. I dont know what to do now - havent seen Charlie or Sylvester or Gingie since yesterday. Anyone got any ideas?
