We have a very thick fog here this mornin with a low round 38 degrees. Forecast is at a 90% chance of rain today an up to 100% chance tonight....so guess they think its gonna rain! Yesterday, with a heavily overcast sky - not sure whether to call em dense clouds or high ridge top fog - but in any case, under a sunless sky we got a lot of fence work done. Since late summer weve had a number of gates left wide open so that the cows could roam from one section to another, but do they bother to use the gates? Heck no! Evidently its much simpler to punch a hole in the fence than walk an extra 60 feet to actually go through a gate. So we spent the day replacin popped staples an tightenin up loose saggin wires. In the section between the east pasture an the old northeast hay field some cow - most likely the bull or one of the steers - decided to punch a new hole in the fence not 30 feet from the gate! In doin so the wires were pulled so taught that not only was the top wire broken, but the gate post was pulled right up out of the ground! Since we didnt have the post driver mounted on the tractor, we used a chain on the tractor to pull the gate an its post back into position then stood on the back of the ATV to gain enough height to use a mallet to pound the post back into the ground. Once wed driven the post down as far as we could get it to go, we used another old post to brace the gate post so that hopefully itll stay put til next spring. For now we left the gate open to allow the cows to continue to roam between sections, though did close em off of the pump-house pasture where we are pasturing the two senior horses an Tempo (the horse with the bad hind hoof).
