We have a very wrong concept about the definition of BACKBITING. We think that if we tell something about our friends which is not correct, it is called backbiting. No, it is called Slander. Backbiting is a true story about him, but discussing in his absence in such a way that it may hurt his feelings if he hears it. Please study this Hadith below :- Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (may peace and blessing of Allah be upon him) as saying: 'Do you know what is backbiting?' (The Companions) said: Allah and His Messenger know best. Thereupon ( the Holy Prophet) said:'Backbiting implies your talking about your brother in a manner which he does not like.' it was said to the Prophet (pbuh): What is your opinion about this that if I actually find (that failing) in my brother which I made a mention of? He said: 'If (that failing) is actually found (in him) what you assert, you in fact backbited him, and if that is not in him it is a slander.' …(Sahih Muslim Vol.4 Book of Virtues and Good manners Ch.1069 Hadith 6265)
