We have always been partial to swashbucklers and critters at our house. That makes the Redwall series of books by Brian Jacques a good summer read-a-loud for our family. These stories have adorable creatures with amusing quirks and velvety fur as well as scabrous vermin who are always trying to take things that don’t belong to them. Twenty-two books make up this series written about the characters who live in and around Mossflower Woods- from the warrior badgers and hares of Salamandastron to the gentle “gudbeasts” of Redwall Abbey. The books do contain some violence but that is balanced by many acts of kindness and mercy. And I appreciate that the heroes are not limited by species, age or gender. My ten year old son and I have moved quickly through the first four books, Redwall, Mossflower, Mattimeo, and Mariel of Redwall. His favorite is the first book which tells of the hero Martin the Warrior; a character often referred to in Mossflower history. The novels were not written in chronological order and they include enough background information so the reader can choose to read them in any order. Nicholas has chosen Outcast of Redwall next. We will start that one tomorrow after breakfast. bit.ly/15VWRlT
