We have an amazing and brave dog to tell you about today- this is Robbie, a 10year male old Shih Tzu who has been undergoing treatment for many years for a condition called dry eye which is common in his breed. The condition means that Robbies eyes cannot produce their own tears, so without his medication Robbies eyes would be uncomfortable and cloudy. His owners need to give him eye drops up to 6 times every day which can be a challenge at times. Debbie, one of our senior vets heard about Robbies story and knew of an operation which could help him. Last week Robbie underwent a surgery called Parotid Duct Transposition. This surgery transfers one of Robbies salivary ducts from the inside of his mouth to his eye. This means that whenever Robbie has a meal or snack some of his saliva will flow into his eye keeping it healthy and moist. What is so amazing about this surgery is that Robbie will never need any drops into his eye again!! The photos are of his operation: 1. His eye before the operation- looking pretty dry. 2. A piece of nylon thread put into the duct in his mouth letting Debbie see the tiny saliva duct entrance she had to dissect round. 3. The stitches holding the duct in place below Robbies eye. Amazing!!
