We have been covering the Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson Cookie - TopicsExpress

We have been covering the Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson Cookie for Troops project for over five years. The leader of the project Alison Bergman from Westchester has done an amazing job growing this program which this year has generated donations from the public of 83,000 boxes of cookies to be given to veterans and active military. The majority of these cookies are being distributed to US military bases, hospitals, and veterans facilities, we are working to help the Girl Scouts send up to 1,500 cartons to deployed military and ships at sea. In past years, the Navy would accept a full container or two of cookie cartons and ship to Kuwait for distribution in the region. Unfortunately the regulations changed this year and the military can no longer accept and ship Donated merchandise. We have helped the Girl Scouts look at every option. Sending a full container to Afghanistan was quoted at $17,000, trucking through Pakistan was mentioned as a high cost element. Our alternative is to mail to key Army contacts in the region one carton at a time and ask them to distribute. Mailing each carton of ten boxes to Afghanistan costs $16 each, the Girl Scouts will add their own cards and notes. We also plan to mail to our Navy contacts. Please consider helping to pay for shipping one or more cartons overseas and make the day for a group of US military members. The Scouts so plan to conduct mailings in July and August. Alison Bergman provides a note below with where contributions can be sent. Thank you for your consideration, Ken Kenneth G. July 1, 2014 Dear Friends: Help Send Cartons of Girl Scout Cookies to Deployed Service Members As head of Operation Cookie Drop, I am writing to tell you about our summer venture with the remaining cases of cookies donated to Operation Cookie Drop, the Girl Scout Heart of the Hudson project which donates cookies to servicemen and women. Our plan is to fill the extra room in the cases with cards and notes from Girl Scouts, and all who want to send a note, and then mail them from local post offices to the soldiers serving in Afghanistan. I have a list of 22 names of soldiers from West Point, who will be in Afghanistan until the end of 2014. While the weight of each case of cookies varies, a bit, the average cost to mail a case of cookies, stuffed with cards and notes, will be $16.00. We would love it if you would consider sponsoring the mailing of a case of cookies. We would also welcome any notes, letters that you would like to have us insert into the cases before we mail the case of cookies you sponsor. Checks can me made out to Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson, and please put Operation Cookie Drop – postage costs on the memo line.
