We have been going through a lesson on Holiness the past several Wednesdays with Bro. Wolford. I love these lessons because they have opened my eyes and my understanding as to what Holiness really is! These are just of few of the topics that we have covered thus far. 1. General Holiness Principles- Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. 2. Legalism- Galatians 2:16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. 3. The Tongue- James 3:1-12 Im not going to type all of this out but this passage is saying that the tongue is an unruly member. James 1:26 say that the tongue is a test of true religion. Matt. 12: 34-37; 15-18 shows us that the tongue reveals the condition of the heart. 1. Tale bearing- gossip, in a negative meaning of the word. Psalm 101:5, Proverbs 11:13; 17:9; 26:20, Romans 1:29-30 Back-biting- Speaking evil, mean things about someone. Slander- False or unverified rumor that defame someone. Even the truth can be tale bearing if told to someone who does not need to know and is told only to hurt someones reputation. 2. Sowing Discord According to Proverbs 6:16-19 the Lord hates one who sows discord. With the tongue we either unify or divide. 3. Swearing Matthew 5:34-37 lets us know that we do not have the power to do so. 4. Taking the Lords name in vain Exodus 20:7 instructs us to avoid all vain(useless), irreverent, profane, trivial uses of a name or title of God. Dont use slang substitutes. 5. Filthy Communication Ephesians 4:29-32; Colossians 3:8 are admonitions to avoid obsene, dirty, vulgar, suggestive language. In Ephesians 5:4 the work jesting means suggestive jokes. 6. Cursing Pronouncement of a curse upon someone, expressing malice. Malice means always taking the evil part. 7. Reviling or railing Abusive, harsh, insolent language Blasphemy is rebelling against God. 8. Lying; False Witness Deceit is lying by false actions 9. Idle words Foolish means idle, stupid talk. Ephesians 5:4 Calling someone a fool. Matthew 5:22 4. The Eye- Ecclesiastes 1:8 All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear fill with hearing. Matthew 6:22-23 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single (meaning focused or clear), thy whole body shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, they whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness The eye is the gate of the soul. The eye is the light (meaning window) of the body. The eye is the primary source of external information. Lust of the eyes is a major source of temptation. 1 John 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
