We have been hearing a lot about Ebola in the news lately so I think it is time to get some information out to our community. Currently there have been no reported cases of Ebola in Wisconsin or any of the surrounding states. Texas is the only state that has had any Ebola patients. If a person has traveled to Cleveland and Texas this does not put anyone at risk of getting Ebola. If a person has traveled to West Africa, mainly the countries of Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea you may be at risk of getting the virus if you have come in contact with someone who was infected. This virus is transmitted through direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected patient so it is pretty hard to contract Ebola. Currently there are just over 9000 people who have contracted Ebola in West Africa with about 4500 deaths. The Beloit Fire Department is working with our local healthcare stakeholders as well as the State Department of Health Services to come up with a response plan should this virus appear in our state. Again there have been no reported cases in the State of Wisconsin. We want to be prepared to provide the best care possible for the people of our community should the virus appear in the state. Please take a moment to watch the video below which will provide a little information on the virus. I also encourage you to visit the CDC website for more information. cdc.gov/vhf/ebola/index.html
