We have been hearing a lot on Low carb diet or high protein diet or Low fat diet. These diets cannot be followed through out our life because of their negative impact on our health. Before choosing any of these diets understand the importance of nutrients. Macro-nutrients and Micro-nutrients : Macro-nutrients: The primary Macro-nutrients are Carbohydrates(Carbs), Protein and Fat. These serve different purposes to provide energy in our body. Carbohydrates: Carbs are the main source of fuel to release energy in our body.They are needed by Central nervous system, kidneys,brain, muscles to function properly. They are also important for intestinal health and waste elimination. Protein:Proteins are essential amino acids important for growth, tissue repair, immunity, producing hormones and enzymes.It provides energy in the absence of carbs. They also help to preserve the lean muscle mass. Fat: The bad reputation for fats needs to be reconsidered. Fats are essential for normal growth and development. They provide cushioning for the organs and helps in absorbing vitamins like A,D,E,K and carotenoids. The concentrated energy obtained from fats helps in maintaining cell membranes and also provide taste and consistency to foods. Micro-nutrients: Unlike Macro,they contain vitamins and minerals which are required in minute quantities. They are essential to ensure normal metabolism,growth and physical well being. Vitamins: A vital micro-nutrient plays an important in normal growth and development, healthy maintenance of cells and tissues. (Vit-A,Pro Vit-A, vit-B1, Vit-B2, Vit-B6, Vit-B12, biotin, Vit-C, Vit-D, Vit-E, Folic acid, Vit- K, niacin and Panthothenic Acid). Minerals:Minerals are important for our body to stay healthy. They help in building bones, making hormones and regulating heartbeat.(Macro Minerals-calcium,magnesium,potassium and sodium. Trace minerals-Iron,manganese,copper,iodine,zinc,cobalt,fluoride and selenium) Water:Apart from the nutrients, Water is also important for our body to support metabolism. A healthy diet is to strike a good balance of Macro-nutrients and include vegetables,fruits and nuts to get enough micro-nutrients.
