We have been receiving a lot of calls lately, in regards to applying Nematodes for Grubs and when is the proper time to do so. Now is NOT the appropriate time to apply Nematodes. It is still far too cold. Nematodes are a microscopic living organism that attack the grubs in the soil. They are very sensitive little creatures, and therefore, SOIL temperatures MUST be at least 10°C consistently for at least 10 days or more, before the time is right. Please note that we said SOIL temperature, not air temperature. This is very important! In previous years, the end of April/beginning of May has been warm enough to apply, but this year we have had exceptionally cold weather, and therefore, our soil temperatures have not risen to the appropriate degree and sustained that degree or higher, as of yet. If you are unsure if your soil temperature has risen to the appropriate degree, use a soil thermometer or a common kitchen meat thermometer to measure soil temperature. (Reserve this thermometer for garden use only thereafter.) Measure the temperature at a depth of 4 to 6 inches and remember that once your soil reaches 10°C, it must maintain that degree for at least 10 days or more, consistently, before you are okay to apply the Nematodes. So, in short, just because they are for sale at some particular big box stores, DOES NOT mean you should apply them now. If you are interested in purchasing Canadian grown Nematodes, please feel free to stop by our retail store and add your name to our Call List for Nematodes. When our Nematodes arrive (which will not be until it is time to apply them) we will call you to tell you they have arrived and that it is the appropriate time to apply. Dont waste your hard earned money by applying them too soon!
