We have failed our soldiers in so many profoundly troubling ways. From not holding our politicians accountable for the illegal wars they start to letting those same politicians ignore their plight once they come back home. Its shit like this that makes me think that we need mandatory military service in this country. Folks might actually take their civic responsibilities seriously, and actually pay attention to what their elected officials really do, if they had a chance of getting sent to fight. Granted, I also think that those who advocate for war should be required to be among the first to be sent into battle. Voting to go to war should be costly and should be painful for those who do the voting, not just those who have to fight it.
