We have given too much power to the state by our need to be peaceful which has actually made our voices irrelevant. (part of the reasoning borrowed from Irshad Manji). In a democracy, the state should be afraid to arrest people who are protesting in a democratic way. Instead we are. I remember someone protesting against a dam that would displace a lot of people - she was on a hunger strike (name: Medha Patkar) sitting outside a Mumbai suburban railway station (1988) - I used to walk past her and see her every day - I had no guts, no courage to talk to her. I used to mistake being peaceful with not getting in trouble, not making me heard, making me invisible. Not a surprise I have landed with smart meters knocking on my doors.
