We have received a final economic plan for the City from Mike Dougherty and the WVU Extension Service. The plan has five recommendations for action: TRANSFORM CONFLICT INTO CONSENSUS The plan says first and foremost the city must discern to what degree those who seemingly oppose almost every action of the city are doing so in the name of the public interest or for personal interest. I have no control over what is printed in the vent lines of the newspapers or on anonymous websites. But we can control the discussion about our city and its future by encouraging the public to participate in the dialogue. FOCUS ON COMMUNITY AESTHETICS The plan says Nitro must upgrade its visual appeal. The Streetscape projects are a great start but more needs to be done. We have contracted with a landscaping professional to develop a plan for improving Nitros appearance. IMPROVE INFRASTRUCTURE This part of the plan says among other things that Nitro needs to improve on its signage and separate the walls that prevents access from one part of the community to another part of the community. UNDERTAKE PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE Many of the issues that Nitro is currently facing can be traced back to one issue-a lack of foresight on the part of the city. Today we have a twenty year plan and are currently working on a comprehensive plan. These efforts have been somewhat disconnected and need to be linked to the larger city, county, or regional plans. FOCUS DEVELOPMENT EFFORTS Development in Nitro must focus on what is appropriate for the city now and in the future. To do this decisions must be based on data and assets. The plan give historical and present data and suggests that the city is prime for niche retail activities and warehousing. The plan will be available on the city website sometime next week and will be presented to the public on November 21st at 11am in council chambers.
