We have received hundreds of comments by telephone, email, Facebook, etc. regarding the Speaker’s election yesterday. I want you to know, firsthand, why I supported Speaker John Boehner. People, even Republicans do not always agree. I have certainly parted ways with the Speaker on many occasions (most recently on the #CRomnibus in December). For four years, Speaker Boehner has been the leader of our majority in the House of Representatives, which has been forced to fend off the President, the Senate, and the Press. All the while, our House majority (NOT THE PRESIDENT OR THE SENATE) has held the line on spending, shrunk our annual deficit, fought the expansion of government, and protected our freedom. Have we gotten everything we wanted...no. Have we achieved all of our goals...certainly not. The American people gave Republicans a majority of both houses of Congress in November. We can use that majority to finally go on offense, stop President Barack Obamas encroachment on our freedom, fight the ever growing mass of federal regulation, and grow our economy. But, we will accomplish nothing if we fail to stand together. I was certainly willing to listen to anyone who wished to serve as Speaker. Just after the November elections, House Republicans gathered to nominate and vote on the candidates for Speaker. We did this so we could be united when we voted against the Democrats (who again put up Nancy Pelosi) on the House floor when the new Congress convened in January. At that meeting in November, Trey Gowdy nominated John Boehner. He was the only candidate that came forward. No one opposed this nomination and Speaker Boehner won unanimously. Then, in the last few days before the House convened, three other candidates announced they would run. At a time when we must be unified, these last minute entries served only to divide. None of yesterday’s last minute candidates received more than a dozen votes. Speaker Boehner received 214 of 236 Republican votes cast, and 5 of 6 republicans in the South Carolina delegation supported him. Louie Gohmert received 3 votes. Ted Yoho received 2. Speaker John Boehner was the only option, and at a time when we have the first Republican majority in both houses of Congress in eight years, we must show the country our party is united and ready to lead. For these reasons, I supported Speaker Boehner.
