We have received some questions about why we have posted some non environment related posts on our page. We are posting our mission statement here for easy reference and information, which is also in the about us section. We would like to take this opportunity to express our heartfelt thanks to you all for the growing interest and support that you folks have shown in our work, with over 12,000 likes/followers, and wish you all a continued harmonious and safe summer. Gaias Mission Statement: Taking its name from Mother Earth in Greek Mythology, The Gaia Foundations mission centres around the interconnection of all things and life on earth, and around working towards harmony and social and environmental justice for all creatures. We humanoids are thus included in the equation :-) . Gaia is therefore not just an ecology organisation, but a Whole Earth organisation. Gaias work is twofold: It works in: 1. hands on coastal zone project management which we call Project Gaia. Gaia was the first NGO in the Maltese Islands to carry out such project management, and thus we are mostly known for this work. It integrates the management of nature with that of history, agriculture, beaches and human safety. Amongst other things we have restored & maintained the Ghajn Tuffieha Tower, opening it to the public, we have promoted organic farming and run our own organic olive groves, we run a tree nursery to provide Malta with indigenous plants, we work for human safety at the beaches we manage, and we have set up a Peace Grove at Ghajn Tuffieha. 2. awareness raising and information: Over our 20 years of operations we have worked to raise awareness of many issues that we see as interconnected. These have included i. rural development ii. sustainable agriculture iii. fair trade iv. healthy diet and holistic living (including our holistic living gaiafests) vi. social justice vii. human rights, viii the promotion of peace and justice, ix. the promotion of clean skies and x. the promotion of clean sport, through a current campaign to raise awareness about doping programmes in the sport of tennis, traditionally seen as a relatively clean sport. xi.the promotion of no hunting in Spring & the right for the People to choose. While our project management (Project Gaia) focuses on the said integrated coastal management, Gaia believes that all the above human issues are related, and that neither society nor the environment we live in can ever move forward without a leap in human consciousness, awareness and pro activeness in these issues. We therefore feel that it is also our duty to speak up and raise awareness about such issues. Our motto is Awareness, Responsibility, Action. Over the years the Foundation has also donated resources to i. famine relief in the Sudan ii. the reconstruction of a public library in the Dominican Republic following destruction during hurricane Georges iii. refugees iv. relief after the Tsunami in the Indian Ocean v. a visitor centre in the Lebanon.
