We have recently begun a venture to care for in the short and long - TopicsExpress

We have recently begun a venture to care for in the short and long term, babies who have been abandoned by their mothers, for whatever reason ... We have converted a large room in our church building for this purpose, beginning to fit it out with the neccessary fixtures and equipment that will provide adequate facilities to accomodate the nurturing of these babies, with the goal of providing a home of acceptance for these abandoned ones so that they will grow up with a deep sense of belonging to society .. This includes finding long term sponsoring of these children to be educated through our pre-school and main-school that we also administer on our church property .. A few weeks ago it came to our attention via the proverbial grapevine that some of the Christian people who used to attend our church are not happy that Fay and I had desecrated the building by creating these facilities for this purpose within our church property, and that we have destroyed part of our facilities for our intended purpose ... It saddens us that bricks and mortar have become more important than people, that the church is seen as a venue for worshiping God rather than a place of assisting humanity to grow in an environment of love and respect for who they intrinsically are ... Where did it go wrong that church is about an instituition and a building rather than about a community of people who care about humanitys healing and nurturing in a world that often rejects beautiful people that have found themselves in difficult and sometimes dire situations? How is is that we have missed the words of Jesus where he said : What you have done to the least of these, you have done to me ? Where are our priorites ...? Where are our hearts real values ? Have we become so blinded by prestige and outward honour that we have forgotten what compassion is really about, that worshipping God is not about meeting on a Sunday, but that it has its most beautiful outworking in creating an environment where everyone knows that they belong in equality to the whole human race ...? The church is not a building, but if it has any relevance, then it is by nature a place of getting to understand that we all have an integral part in this world, a place of perpetuating this understanding of belonging and is expressed in concrete terms by those who are willing to impart this deep sense of belonging to anyone and everyone who might have found that they have been rejected by any of societys shallow demands ... Where your treasure is, there also will your heart be ... In institutional bricks, or in the people of this world ...
