We have some more details on the whale entanglement. Our call yesterday to the government department responsible for whales entangled in shark nets resulted in a redirection due to the fact our contact did not believe the whale was entangled in a shark net, and was therefore not his problem. However, this morning, after checking his email of the picture of the whale caught in a net, he has realised that it was in fact a shark net. When we had previously described white buoys, he had claimed that none of the shark nets had white buoys. But after seeing the picture, he realised that the net was in fact an older model shark net. The net (25 meters in length) was known to have gone missing from Currumbin Beach near the Gold Coast only a few days ago. It’s not a large leap to hear of an entanglement case and realise that it could be the net which had gone missing only a few days prior.
