We have started packing up and readying ourselves to discharge - TopicsExpress

We have started packing up and readying ourselves to discharge tomorrow. It has produced some unexpected emotions as we come across our old friends the black brace, the heel protectors, and the transfer boards. The transfer boards were used by Seth for a very short time to help him as he learned to transfer himself safely from the bed to the chair, chair to the shower chair, etc. The board is used so that the patient can slide across until they become strong enough and/or confident enough to basically power up and over. There is always a concern as the patient with sensory deficits learns these skills. There is a risk for injury to skin, balance issues, etc. But Seth mastered transfers really rapidly. So we used the boards for only several days… so why in the world those boards induced a river of tears, I do not know. Those boards were like Seth’s first glimpse at becoming independent… if he could transfer himself, he could get out of bed at will. Transferring safely to the shower chair meant… you got it, ability to clean up when he wanted. He was no longer at the mercy of staff or mama. When I found the transfer boards, I stood holding them… throw them away? Take them home (for what?)… etc. I must have looked confused and perplexed! Seth spoke up and said… let’s give them to the therapists. That way if someone does not have insurance, they can get these boards. We cannot see a need for them again but they were not cheap so that is a perfect plan. His black brace was custom fitted to his skinny little body so that is not as likely a useable donation. So I guess we will take it home… as a reminder. Hmmm, I don’t think we will need a physical souvenir of this journey as Seth continues on his recovery at home. The therapists will cut the current cast off Seth’s left leg today and recast. With each casting, they are changing the angle of the foot in hopes of continuing to stretch it to a more normal angle. As of this morning, the plan is that we will come back next Tues for them to remove this one and cast one more time for a removeable boot/cast for ongoing use. Seth’s permanent wheelchair has arrived and he gets that today- he is so excited. (that is a sad commentary on our current threshold for excitement)… and the good news is…. The insurance has not yet approved payment of the almost $3000 wheelchair. Hopefully (and I believe it to be true) this is simply a paperwork glitch that will quickly resolve itself. I heard from our contractor yesterday that the farm bathroom should be completed by around lunch today! That is perfect timing….. why, oh why was I worried? The electricity at our farm abode is not yet run, but hopefully this will be quickly done and then I will be right behind the boys. (Don’t you know that they will love that?). The house in town has been shown a few times this week- fingers crossed. And Clayton took a job that will bring him back to Middle GA. That is the news for today…. We head toward the farm tomorrow and the next leg of this marathon begins. In the meantime, we are praying for the ones from our community who were in serious accidents this week and those who lost loved ones. Our hearts are heavy as they wait on the Lord for healing (of the body and of the heart). A song that has been a comfort to me (Kari Jobe, artist) is based on a few of the Psalms… It is comforting to know that even amidst what appears to be a sea of trouble and turmoil and yes, even grief, Our Lord is for us.. He will not and has not forsaken us. - thanks for the reminder, Billy Daws (lyrics by Kari Jobe and the psalmist): I know that you are for me, I know that you are for me, I know that you will never forsake me in my weakness) Psalms 118:6 6 The lord is for me, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me? Psalms 27:14- Wait for the LORD; Be strong and let your heart take courage; Yes, wait for the LORD.
