We have talked a lot lately about good works and the futility of those works outside of the expression of the character and love of Jesus Christ. As we saw, Salvation complete with entrance into the Kingdom of God (Heaven) should produce a transformation in the character and nature of the individual which can be seen consistently in daily life. The works of kindness which the sons of God perform should not mask a hidden, self-serving intent, but they should reflect the nature and life of Jesus. In Psalm 15 the Holy Spirit speaks of the heart attitude that is necessary to live in the presence of God. Psalm 15:1-5 “O LORD, who shall sojourn in thy tent? Who shall dwell on thy holy hill? He who walks blamelessly, and does what is right, and speaks truth from his heart; who does not slander with his tongue, and does no evil to his friend, nor takes up a reproach against his neighbor; in whose eyes a reprobate is despised, but who honors those who fear the LORD; who swears to his own hurt and does not change; who does not put out his money at interest, and does not take a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things shall never be moved.” 1) No lies 2) No gossip 3) No arguing with or misuse of people 4) Does not pursue a wrong done to him 5) Despises all evil (no participation or approval) 6) Shows preference to the brethren 7) Keeps his word 8) Gives generously without charge 9) Does not profit at the expense of others. If we ran that check list each night before we closed our eyes, I wonder how we would do?
