We have talked a lot on here about defensible space when it comes to saving us from the next big wildfire, and yesterday a fire on Iowa Hill did just that. Check out where the home is located in these photos. All around it is green grass, native and fire resistant plants, and no trees are touching the home or within 30 feet of it. Second, take a look at the stand of trees that is on the property, there are no limbs or brush within 8 feet of the ground, the grass is naturally dry but trimmed, and there isnt a dead tree or bush present at all. Had those tree limbs been touching the ground, the grass fire would have very likely went into the trees and we wouldve had an entire stand of timber burning. Once that timber burned, it would have dropped wind blown embers all over the Iowa Hill and Dixon Mill area, dozens of homes and farms would have been in danger, and Oregons next big fire wouldve been here. Yet none of this potential happened, all because the homeowner took steps to prepare their home for a day like yesterday. We always appreciate it when people say firefighters are heroes, but this family is truly our hero! If you live in or near the woods please contact us, we can help you identify ways to protect your home like this family did.
