We heard a lecture from Professor Julian Hamilton-Shield at the Obesity Forum this week, hes Professor of Diabetes and Metabolic Endocrinology at the University of Bristol. He said: Children who are diagnosed with type two diabetes will probably not reach 40 or 50 years of age. Seems unthinkable eh? But this is a new situation, never before have we seen so very many children with this disease. One in five children born at the new century, in the UK, was obese by age 11. ioe.ac.uk/newsEvents/107950.html Type 2 diabetes is lifestyle-related - a product of overweight and obesity and too much sugary food and drink. He also listed a few of the problems experienced by overweight children: + Sleep apnoea (constriction of airways caused by fat). ...and as a result, falling asleep at school or not attending. + Intracranial hypertension (high pressure inside the skull). + Joint dysfunction. + Skin problems. + Liver disease. + Gallstones. + Diabetes. Thats not to mention the bullying and self-esteem issues. Its cruelty.
