We heard a wonderful concert by Kathleen Supove Friday night at the Center for New Music in San Francisco. Digital Debussy programmed works that Supové commissioned (by Daniel Felsenfeld, Randall Woolf, and Annie Gosfield) which referenced or were influenced by Debussy — all of which were terrific — and Feux dArtifice (from Préludes Book II, 1912–13) by Debussy himself. As much as I liked the contemporary works, the surprise was how differently I heard the Debussy — because of context (I guess). It seemed to be completely in The Now, almost nothing betraying the fact that it was written over a century ago. This concert was one in Lara Downes Artists Session series. Great stuff.
