We heard some of you didnt get the Newsletter this month. Here you go... March Newsletter 2/24/14 - 3/29/14 1960 CrossFit Friends and Family, Mental toughness is Having the natural or developed psychological edge that enables you to: generally, cope better than your opponents with the many demands (competition, training, lifestyle) that sport places on a performer; specifically, be more consistent and better than your opponents in remaining determined, focused, confident, and in control under pressure. (Jones, Hanton, & Connaughton, 2002, p. 209). Mental toughness is not only important in CrossFit, but also in everyday life. Raising a family, working in the business world, vying for that promotion, being a spouse, all those things require mental toughness. This month, I want you to memorize the 7 Cs of mental toughness for athletes and apply them to your workouts as well as your everyday life. The Seven Characteristics of MENTAL TOUGHNESS: 1. Competitive – “A competitor will always find a way to win. Competitors take bad breaks and use them to drive themselves even further. Quitters take bad breaks and use them as reasons to give up” – Nancy Lopes (professional golfer) 2. Confident- “Every time I play, in my own mind I’m the favorite” – Tiger Woods. Confident athletes have a can-do attitude, a belief they can handle whatever comes their way. They almost NEVER fall victim to self defeating thoughts. 3. Control – successful athletes are able to control their emotions and behavior. They focus on what they CAN control and don’t allow things that are out of their control to effect them. Mentally tough athletes possess the ability to maintain poise, emotional control, and concentration under the greatest pressure and the most challenging situations. 4. Committed – Mentally tough athletes focus their time and energy on their goals and their dreams. They are self-directed and highly motivated. 5. Composure – Mentally tough athletes know how to stay focused and deal with adversity. How they manage their emotions will determine whether they win or lose. 6. Courage – BE A RISK TAKER!!! That’s what peak performers do. Only climbers get to the top. The campers, those who get part of the way up and stay where they are, will never feel as alive or proud as the climbers. It takes courage to grow up and achieve your full potential. 7. Consistency – Mentally tough athletes possess an inner strength. They often play their best when they’re feeling their worst. They don’t make excuses Competition is won on the playing field between the ears. Practice the 7 c’s of mental toughness. Learn to love competition. Border Wars We want to give a huge shout out to Jacky, Andrea G., Byron, Herman, and Fido for their awesome performances at Ranger CrossFits Border Wars competition. Fido finished 9th overall and our team finished 6th overall. They missed top 5 by just 3 points! There is something pretty awesome about traveling over 5 hours for a two day competition. It brings you closer. One of the coolest things about that weekend was meeting a CrossFit wunderkind named Josh. At just 17 years old, he was competing in the Rx division and ended up placing 3rd overall. We basically took him under our wing for the weekend. He may just pay us a visit this summer so be sure to welcome him with open arms. Not only were we proud of the performances, but we also were incredibly proud of the camaraderie our people displayed. Here is a copy of a post to the 1960 CrossFit timeline on Facebook: I throughly enjoyed watching your team compete this weekend. Your support of each other is amazing, your energy unchained! Your encouragement and enthusiam fed over to individuals competing as well. Thanks for the support, your awesomeness, and your commradorie. A new family and a fit body RECIPE OF THE MONTH - Lemon Artichoke Chicken This recipe comes from Paleo Lifestyle Magazine: Paleo Chicken Recipes, Paleo Artichoke Recipes, Lemon Artichoke Chicken, Paleo Recipes, Its A Lifestyle Check out this great recipe from Kristen Siverman of It’s A Lifestyle. Lemon Artichoke Chicken Ingredients: Artichoke Hearts Lemon, thinly sliced 1 Tbsp fresh thyme 1 medium sweet onion (I like to shred it, but chopped is fine) 1 ½ lbs. of boneless chicken breasts, thinly sliced or pounded. 3 Tbsp EVOO Salt & Pepper, to taste Make: Heat 2 Tbsp EVOO to saucepan over medium heat. Add onion, a pinch of salt, and fresh ground black pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until onion become soft and start turning brown. About 10-15 minutes. Add chicken and brown on both sides. Thinly sliced chicken should not take too long to brown, so watch it. In a separate pan, combine additional EVOO and artichokes. Cover the saucepan and sauté, on low heat, for about 5 to 6 minutes. Uncover, and add in lemon slices and sauté for 2 more minutes. Add the chicken to this saucepan, along with thyme and salt & pepper. Stir a few times and remove from heat. Plate and serve! Enjoy!
