We just got new details from the Omaha Police Department about the deadly officer-involved shooting: On Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at 5:38 p.m., members of the Metro Area Fugitive Task Force and the Omaha Police Department Gang Unit were attempting to apprehend Willie D. Michalak near 11th & Dorcas. Michalak was wanted on felony arrest warrants from Dodge County, NE. The felony warrant charges include habitual criminal, attempt of a class II felony, two counts of burglary, two counts of theft by unlawful taking over $1,500.00, operating a motor vehicle to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. As the officers approached Michalak, gunshots were fired by multiple officers from multiple agencies. Michalak received fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by Omaha Fire Rescue personnel. This incident is being investigated by the Omaha Police Department’s Officer-Involved Investigations Squad. The United States Marshal Service and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement are cooperating with the investigation. The investigation is in the early stages. Per Omaha Police Department policy, any officer who discharges his/her firearm that results in injury or death is placed on paid administrative leave pending Homicide and Internal Affairs investigations. Two Omaha Police Officers involved in this incident were placed on paid administrative leave. Any additional information about this incident will be released by the OPD Press Information Office.
