We just posted on our History Flight website a few shots from a repatriation ceremony a couple of weeks ago on Tarawa. Over a thousand Marines lost their lives in the battle of Tarawa in November 1943. The deaths of hundreds were recorded but information about the location of their graves was lost, and they remain buried there, waiting to be found and brought home. Mark Noah and the History Flight team have been relentless in their determination to locate these men who gave their lives for us, and relentless in their determination to cut through government red tape and enable competent non-governmental organizations to do the work that our government cant or wont do. Sometimes budget constraints stand in the way, sometimes organizational jealousy. Whatever the reason, technically competent, privately funded groups like History Flight are beginning to make a real difference. Earlier this month, History Flight took six veterans - survivors - of the battle of Tarawa back to participate in a repatriation ceremony for the remains of about 40 Marines recovered by History Flight so far this year. The remains will go back to JPACs forensic lab (CILHI), in Honolulu for identification and return to their families. You can help the continuation of this important work by making a donation through the website...
