We just read Julies book, Small Fires, for the class in memoir I am taking this semester at Hollins with Karen McElmurray. Its heartrendingly beautiful. Tomorrow we have the incredible opportunity to interview her and ask her questions about her work via skype--one of the best uses of technology in a classroom I have ever seen. Thank you, Karen, for this quote. I know what it is to carry the terrible weight of thus and therefore, two ballasts bent in equal parts despair. No explanation, only outcome. I am to my family what earthquakes are to waves: conspicuous disruption of continuity, of certainty. I happened beneath their surface, below their radar. I began with tremor and culminated in devastation. After hashish and Hail Mary; after rock salt and studded tired; after insufficient postage and reckless penmanship--accusation lodged inside apologies--after so much weathering that I have forgotten who, in fact, is the storm: my surrender takes new form. -Julie Marie Wade
