We just received the news that legendary producer, singer, songwriter and all around Rock/Pop impresario Kim Fowley died at age 75 after a long battle with bladder cancer. Known as a crazy dude and a perfectionist, Kim has been close to rock greatness without ever really carving out a name for himself in the public limelight. He has worked with Alice Cooper and Frank Zappa, and he created and produced the teen girl band The Runaways. He collaborated with Skip Battin (bassist for The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Bros, The New Riders at various intervals) on several recordings in the late 50s through early 70s, and cowrote every song credited to Battin. Rest in peace, Kim Fowley. Here is a Byrds song he cowrote with Skip Battin, with Battin playing bass and singing lead vocals. It was the last Byrds single released by Columbia Records before they left the label. It had a catchy tune with novelty lyrics typical of Kim Fowley. It received a lot of heavy AirPlay on NEW and other such stations around the USA, but not too much on top 40 stations. How did they expect a song that says one of Americas national pastimes is grabbing some ass to be played in AM radio?? Enjoy, and thanks for everything, Kim Fowley.
