We just wanted to share this fantastic happy ending with you! Over the summer, a dog named Red was brought to ACL by Oak Park Animal Control after his owner had passed away. This 12 yr old dog who had lived with his human Dad since puppyhood, was nervous and disoriented upon his arrival-his whole world had been turned upside down. After a day or so in our care, Red won our hearts with his goofy smile and silly personality. He was in our program for about 6 months, and we are very happy to announce that he has been officially adopted by his foster dad! We have shared a letter from Reds new owner and want to say congrats to Red and thank you to his new Dad Ron for seeing what we saw in this great dog. We know Red has found a great place to live out his golden years! From Reds New Dad... I have had the pleasure of Red’s company for about 3 months now. I started out fostering him, but soon realized he belonged with me forever. Red is considered a “special needs” dog, but he has never caused trouble or extra effort on my part. Like any other dog – or living thing for that matter – he just wants to be loved. Not everyone felt Red should be put up for adoption because of endless list of ailments, but luckily the Animal Care League decided he was worth the extra work. Thank goodness they did! Having Red in my home was a learning experience for us both. Because of his glaucoma, his visual world has a white veil over it – only able to see faint shapes, but no detail. This hasnt slowed Red down one bit! He was quick to learn the layout of my house – only 4 days! But learning how to get him to see his food dish took a little more time. We have now settled on a white dish on a LARGE, dark floor mat (he’s a bit messy…). He loves going on walks, despite his awkward gate and arthritis pain. And man oh man, this guy is a natural people person! I’m not exaggerating when I say that almost every household in a 4-6 block radius has at least one person that knows Red by name. They’re even rallying for him to run for mayor! Vote for Red has a nice ring to it… “Special needs” dog…hardly. If anything, he’s enriched my life like any other 4-legged companion. The world would be a better place if people would take the time to enjoy a furry friend like Red. Who rescued who? - Ron Smith
